    Yup. Lotsa things.

If you are trying to receive FM stations-increase your antenna height. Connect your receiver’s antenna or external antenna jack to a properly grounded (ground is everything) outdoor antenna. FM works on a line-of-sight priciple. If your antenna can "see" the transmitter’s antenna and you are within the transmitters range-you can receive the signal.
Remember-On FM, the strongest station rules the frequency.
A stronger local station on the same frequency as the one you are trying to receive may overpower the distant station.
    AM signals:
On broadcast frequencies, antenna height is still the rule.
Try a horizontally polarized (sideways antenna). You might hear stuff from across the world.

Keep your antenna correct in length for the wavelengths you want to receive.

Here’s an antenna length calculator for ya:

Any old wire can be an excellent antenna as long as it is the correct length to resonate on the frequencies you wish to receive.
