I know it is bad for small children to watch TV but what about radio/music?

Is it ok to have the stereo on all the time? I listen to radio 4, sometimes Kerrang and my daughter has lots of music cds she likes .
Is it bad to be listening to the stereo too much?
My daughter is 14 months old
A few of you have said that watching tv is not bad for SMALL children. Maybe you should check out these links:

Music can be good for a child, however there has been some evidence that constant or very frequent background noise interferes with speech development in young children. I think music is fine if it’s a cd or some radio here and there but I wouldn’t have it on for hours out of the day. Also it depends on the music. I’m not sure what radio 4 is but the only music that has been shown to be good for children is classical. That’s not to say that’s all we ever listen to other music but I think it should be limited. Also I think it’s better for kids to hear you singing or making music than to have the radio on.

I totally agree with you on the tv thing- it’s based in a lot of evidence and I’m not sure why more people don’t care about the bad effects of TV on kids.

  1. Music is good for a child because it aids in the development of the imagination…and imagination is what leads to intelligence.

  2. As long as it’s not too loud. I don’t see that it would do any harm!

  3. Classical music at a low level (not some deafening level) is the best.

You can put away the rap and hip hop discs.

  5. MUSIC IS WONDERFUL! Infact studies have shown music makes a child smarter…Fom day one my son has listened to radio, he gets only 30- mins of tv! Play anytype of tunes, from Jazz..classical..to heavy metal, just not to loud for the sensitive ear drums and have fun dancin around, makes for a great workout also, for child & and parents!! ROCK ON!!

  7. I don’t know too much about what is best for children, as I am only a first time mom…but I find that my son LOVES music…not just classical but all types. He’s 11 months old, and I am constantly catching him bobbing his head, waving his hands, bouncing his body, and kicking his feet whenever music is on…he’s even developed his own taste music…which doesn’t match my husband’s and mine…but that’s okay because that just means that he’s becoming an individual. Anything that makes your child smile and laugh (at that age and of course within reason) can’t be that bad, right?!? I would say to change the stations around and let your daughter decide what SHE wants to listen to…it’ll give you insight to what kind of music she likes.

  8. I don’t think that it is bad for young children to watch TV. As in most things in life, moderation is best. For instance, sitting with the child to watch Children’s TV rather than dumping the child in front of the TV, using the TV as a baby-sitter, gives quality time to mother and child.

  9. It’s not bad fro small children to watch tv. It’s bad if they are just sat in front of it all day with no interaction from anyone else, but general tv watching is fine. My kids have the telly on when they want it on. It’s unbelievable the stuff they have learnt from it. It’s not all bad. I guess it depends on what they watch.

And in answer to your question no it’s not bad as long as they aren’t listening to Eminem or some rap artist like that and singing along!

Why is it bad for small children to watch T.V ?? (try Cbeebies), Like everything in life Moderation is the key!. I find it so sad people can not control their own life or make the best decision for their children. Don’t follow some liberal views which is why this country is going down the pan (using your computer is bad for also!!!!)

  12. Give them plenty of different music styles to listen too but not too loud – I go for Radio 2 during the day or one of many cd’s – everything from AC/DC to Zappa. Also a little tele watching age appropriate programmes wont do any harm – I use cbeebies for my two year old or citv in the morning to distract him while I get my housework done. He has favourites to watch and I don’t mind that.

I know know who states that watching tv is bad for kids. I think it only depends on what they are watching and how long they spend watching. Music is good for them there is nothing wrong with that just try to have them listen to kids music( depending on age) and education T.V As long as u know what they r listening too is all good. music opens up their minds.

They need to be exposed slowly to worldly things and guided on what is right and wrong. Not kept away from it but aware of things so that they don’t grow up and become nieve. (spell?) They will not know the ways of the world and things will be worse for them if you try to shelter them too much.

  15. I don’t have any statistics or data to back this up, but I believe music is great for kids. It’s a form of the arts which is inspiring and uplifting and great for that building imagination as they grow up. I say go for it…and good for you for limiting the TV!

  16. watching tv is NOT bad for children, as long as you don’t use it as a babysitter, but as an educational toy for them. There are many shows geared fro small children that help them learn to speak properly with repetition, and teaches them about the world around them. my granddaughter(she is 12 months) loves the animal shows on tv, and basically ignores everything else. she prefers to dance to the radio.

  17. Watching TV is not neccessarily bad for young kids. It has to do twith the content of what they are watching and the duration. If you have a small child and they watching sesame street all day long then that can be bad. Young kids need to be active and do things not sit on their butts in front of the tv. As for radio, music is good for kids and adults also. Again, you have to watch the contents of the music they are listening to. Not all music is good for all listeners.

Music is stimulating intellectually, creatively an emotionally to a child. It is not like the stupid TV which zaps all that out of them.

It is a good thing for kids.

My grandson loves Baby Einstein and I do too actually :)
Music is really good for babies and small children..I used instumental sounds with flutes or pianos… The nature sounds are also good…
Another excellent idea is when my little ones were little and they were sick or had a hard time sleeping I had this tape that played ocean waves and played soothing music and they were asleep before the disk could really get going.. :)
Seems to be working good on my grandson too :)

Hope this helps you some ..

A little bit of TV won’t harm your child either- it helps to develop concentration, and a lot of programmes these days are educational- especially Cbeebies.

  23. why is it bad for kids to watch TV ?? My 3 watched tv and it never did them any harm, they learn from it, by the age of 4 my eldest knew the alphabet in latin (due to watching BArney) granted she doesn’t know it anymore but why would she need to lol.

Kids learn through watching what we think are "silly programmes", let your poor child live a little, buy a TV

music is good…if yu have it on all the time your daughter will not take much notice of it though.
Vary the music she listens to; collect cultural music, relaxing music, drums. the more you vary the genre of music your daughter listens to, the more she will appreciate all aspects of music. Just remember not to keep it on constantly. Music shoud be listened to, not for back ground noise.

  25. i don’t think children watching TV is bad for children,by the age of 2 my daughter knew all her numbers 1-15 her alphabet all her colours (even silver) a lot of her shapes and (through singing a song) the days of the week, this was through watching cbeebies for about 3-4 hours a day so i don’t think it harms them (though watching it 24/7 might) it has helped educate my daughter

A small amount of tv won’t do them any harm at all!
My son is 20 months & he doesn’t have the concentration span to watch more than maybe 15 minutes at a time. He watches Bear in the Big Blue House & Bob the Builder but isn’t interested in anything else. The tv is on nearly all day but he doesn’t take any notice of it unless there is an advert on that he likes the music to, in which case he gets up & dances.
I think a bit of tv is fine as it does teach them things, e.g. numbers, colours etc.
