Simon & Garfunkel – The Sounds of Silence – 45 RPM ORIGINAL HOT MONO MIX
Original Columbia Records #43396
Debut 11/20/65
Peaked at #1 for two weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Written by Paul Simon
Produced by Tom Wilson
From the Columbia LP “Wednesday Morning 3 A.M.”
This is the “electric version” where Columbia Records took the original acoustic version as recorded by Simon & Garfunkel originally, and then added additional electric instruments including both a lead & bass guitar.
This electric version helped make this Simon & Garfunkel’s first major hit!
This is also the original HOT MONO MIX that sounds much more powerful and superior compared to the very common thin, wimpy stereo version that is heard all the time on oldies radio.

@spanky167 the electric sounds better than the original. thank their manager for putting in the electric instruments without their permission. thats why this song is famous.
the “original” went largely unnoticed
I have loved this …
I have loved this song since I was a child, and will have to admit that this version does sound alot better on record. Thanks for putting this on the web.
Sadly, there is …
Sadly, there is only one reason that these supurb mono mixes are not available on CD: Paul Simon himself. He has for years dismissed the mono mixes as “inferior”, in his own words. These 45’s, along with the entire Bookends LP, are FAR superior in their mono mixes!

This beautiful, …
This beautiful, haunting 60’s pop song has always been one of my favorites from the decade, it’s always been one that I could reflect to, the title says it all, and after four decades, it hasn’t lost any luster at all, a true, alltime pop classic…
The drums sound …
The drums sound awesome on this HOT MONO Mix that was played regularly on WABC and WMCA back in the 60’s! Nice to see you back Spencer!
pretty sure the …
pretty sure the original had no electric instuments
You are hearing a …
You are hearing a combination of two things:
1.) The source is vinyl, which was from an analog master tape – not an MP3, or anything digital.
2.) The mix is very different on the original 45 RPM vinyl record, that for reasons unknown, is not available today on any format – CD, MP3, whatever. Only by going back to the original 45 do you hear this MUCH better version of this great song!
OK I am part of the …
OK I am part of the Information age, only 23. I just listened to the stereo version of this song and it sounded empty. In mono its chilling, in stereo its just another good song.

originally acoustic …
originally acoustic on “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” that version had a band overdubbed (in stereo on one channel), and that release was on the album “Sounds of Silence” in Stereo. This here is the special MONO mix from that album. This song was released previously on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M…It was taken from their debut and electric instruments and drums were overdubbed by Bob Dylan’s studio band on June 15, 1965 and released in September 1965 as a single. I NEVER NOTICED THAT vroom

i cant tell…but the drummer is keeping up.
I know of a used …
I know of a used record store that probably has many of these things. They have TONS OF STUFF, and are having a … 0:48 that ‘triangle’ sound I NEVER heard before… 45 rpm sale for $2.00 each. (we sang this in chours in 1983) I now understand about some songs being remixed for mono of this era, and you are right. some you can hear things you cant hear on the album mixes. The stereo mix is just the acoustic “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” with the band on one channel . That was released on LP…
Amen. I come from …
Amen. I come from the CD era… but my father has “The graduate” soundtrack in Vinyl… and I just can put into words the feeling I get when you see the needle touching lightly the disc …that 0:19 … and the “rainy” sound in the back….For me… if I need to describe how happiness sounds like, that’s the sound.
Indeed long live Vinyl!!.
In the second half …
In the second half of the song, you can hear how the drums speed up a little bit, then slow down, then speed up again, in order to keep pace with the original acoustic recording.
This one gives my …
This one gives my sub woofer a workout every time. You can really hear the difference coming from the original 45 record compared to CD or MP3. Long live vinyl!!
This is one of …
This is one of Simon & Garfunkels Greatest Hits. Recorded in 1965 i believe.
