What is the maximum power output for an FM radio transmitter?

Posted by admin on March 4th, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 2 Comments »

What is the FCC rule, without a license, in the US, the maximum power output for an (88-108MHz) FM radio transmitter?

In simple terms, your limit would be 100 mw. or 1 tenth of a watt….(That might get you a few hundred feet..with a good antenna, a bit more.)

Why the national radio stations have a range of FM frequencies?

Posted by admin on March 3rd, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 3 Comments »

For example, BBC radio 1 is ranging from 97 – 99 FM, radio 2 is 88 – 91 FM, classic FM is 100 – 102 FM, etc. Why couldn’t these stations broadcast in only one frequency nationally (for example, just FM 98.8 for radio 1 throughtout the UK) and then free up the rest of the frequency range to other radio stations?

They probably do only broadcast in one frequency, your radio is sensitive enough to pick them up over several frequencies. If you are really close to a really powerful signal, it could override low power signals.

I need FM radio frequency in California to work with my FM transmitter MP3 player?

I have a TomTom GO 730 which has an FM transmitter to play my mp3 songs through my car radio. I would like a good frequency that I can use the entire length of my drive from southern California to northern California. I don’t want to have to keep searching during the trip.

I may not be able to give you a specific frequency, but I do have some advice:

If at all possible, remove the radio antenna from your car when you want to listen to MP3s. This will make give you a much smaller pick up range for the radio, meaning the FM Transmitter should be the only thing it pick up well, even if there is interference on the specific station you choose.

Where are some good resources in building an FM radio from scratch?

Posted by admin on February 24th, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 1 Comment »

I want to learn FM radio reciever theory well enough where I can build my own FM radio from scratch without using someone elses skematic. I know it will probably be hard but I know it’s possible if I can be guided to the right resources.

Try to find a seasoned ham who can explain the basics of RF to you. This stuff is not so much hard as it is tricky. It is also 10000% easier if you have the right tools and measurement instruments. To build a radio if you have both a spectrum and impedance analyzer is a walk in the park and extremely instructive. You will learn in no time and be an aspiring RF pro by the time you are done. But the same task without that equipment is a nightmare. Personally (I happen to be a professional), I wouldn’t go near any RF circuits without the right lab equipment. But maybe that just shows my age and limited willingness to frustrate myself when I know better.

Good luck and have fun!

I don’t have an FM radio, but an acquaintance of mine does an hourly show and it’s important that I listen to it.

All you need is the website and the listen live button and you are set to listen online. If you are unsure of the website I have searched the internet and found these sites you can listen online to radio stations that are streaming live; You might be able to find the site here.
here is a list of websites to try below.

I need information about how to start an FM Radio Station?

Posted by admin on February 20th, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 3 Comments »

I need information about how to start an FM Radio Station?
We are located in the state of Washington, USA.
What needs to be done? What does it involve? Can you recommend any reading materials?

FM Radio stations normally uses a commercial band or commecial frequency.

the frequency is allocated to a person or coporation by a government body (FCC) through a legislative franchise. I am not sure how long a franchise would last in the US, but it is around 20 yrs or more. The franchise would need to be legislative in nature meaning, congress would need to pass a bill for the frequency, or congress has allowed the FCC to allocate the frequency to it’s franchisee.

At this time, I would think that the FM band would be full and no franchise would be available, unless a franchise holder exits or allows someone else to use the rights to the franchise.

If you think you have a shot at a franchise then go ahead and secure that franchise from the FCC.

The rest would be technical stuff like locating your stations, the transmitter and FM Booths. If your station would be in one area then your equipment sets would be less, if your FM booth is away from the transmitter area then you would need to have an exciter and even a microwave link for the two sites, line would work but would be expensive.

You would need to work on your equipment. The transmitter would be the huge capital area next to the franchise and normally the FCC would guide you on how strong your transmitting power would be.

I guess your are researching this for your paper or homework.

Get in touch with broadcast engineers for more idea on what equipment you need.

How do I create a FM radio station?

Posted by admin on February 18th, 2010 and filed under fm radio | 4 Comments »

First off, because I do not want to hear morons saying this and that – it IS LEGAL to create a low powered radio station, which is what I want to do.

So how do I go about creating a low powered FM radio, what equipment will I need? Cheapest please, because its just for fun.
I just need it to go a short distance, nothing too far.

I have a friend here at work that has one that transmits a good 10 miles. Certainly not legal but he’s never received any complaints. You can build your own radio from components and the neat thing is that you can vary the power on that when you build it. So if you want to transmit a small range like 100 feet you can or if you want to transmit several miles you can. Building an FM transmitter is easy. Here is a link with a collection of several FM transmitter designs:

http://www.madcircuits.com/circuits/communications/fm-circuits

Here is one of the circuits from there:

http://www.madcircuits.com/communications/fm-circuits/high-quality-fm-transmitter-circuit-useful-transmitting-music-around-your

which is a better quality one. Most of these don’t take many components and I would buy them from Digikey. What I would do is get together a list of components and buy some extras and maybe make a couple of transmitters. You can start with an easy one and then build a harder one. If you do a search for a 4 watt pirate radio out there, you will find one transmitter plan that should transmit a good 50 miles. I’m not advocating breaking the law, etc, but you can get a good idea of how to build the transmitters and building is cheaper. My friend who has his transmitter bought it and paid like $300 or more for it.
